This MFA thesis involved extensive research, exploration, analysis and a thorough understanding of a topic. It required the development of strategies that raise awareness and provide a creative design solution to a large-scale problem. I chose to create design solutions to ease and manage one's life with OCD. With limited resources available for an OCD individual and involving art–a relatively new concept in therapy; ArtObsessed seemed like a fresh approach to the mental health community in San Francisco.

Those battling OCD fear seeking help due to the stigma associated with mental illness and often feel they are battling it alone, living in isolation and shame. Conventional forms of therapy or help are often expensive, not accessible or intimidating for those with OCD. The median onset age of the disorder is 19 years where students are too scared to seek help yet have a desire to feel better.

The outcome of this thesis was to enhance the confidence of those with OCD through Art. Three strategies for ArtObsessed are: (1) Overcome the stigma through an inclusive self-help art approach to build confidence of those with OCD, (2) bridge those with OCD and creative students in artistic activities while providing an outlet to express, and (3) celebrate achievements amongst the general public.
